The Difference Between Clearing Your Cache And Clearing Your Data

SHARE

The options to clear your cache and clear your data are ones that help to solve all sorts of problems for those who own Android devices, yet a lot of people also tend to get confused between the two terms. This often leads to them getting interchanged quite a bit.

The Differences

Whenever any of your applications begin to act in any sort of strange manner, the first thing you will need to do is clear the cache of the app itself. This is perhaps the best way to help fix all sorts of bugs that may be affecting it, and it’s also a great deal more safer than resorting to force-closing the app entirely.

To clear the cache of an app, simply follow these steps:

  1. Tap on your device’s “Settings” icon
  2. From there, tap on the “Applications” option
  3. Next, go to “Manage Applications”
  4. Choose the “All” tab and select the particular app that is being affected
  5. Select the “Clear Cache” option

When you clear the cache of an application, you are essentially clearing out all of that app’s temporary files that may be responsible for making it act weird. It’s also worth noting that this is an extremely safe process, as it will retain all of the settings of your app.

However, if you discover that clearing the cache doesn’t actually solve the problem, the next step to consider would be to clear all of the data of the application. All you have to do is follow all of the aforementioned steps, but instead of tapping on the “Clear Cache” option, you would instead tap on the “Clear Data” option.

Clearing the data of an app is typically much more effective than clearing the cache; however, by doing this, you will restore the application to its original settings, and it will be as though you just uninstalled, then re-installed it.

Prior to resorting to clearing the data of an application entirely, be sure to attempt to clear the cache of the app first, as the earlier step will definitely save you a lot of headaches later on!
